TC AD No.: CF-2002-10

Subject: Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100 Intercompressor Case Fire

Effective: 1 March 2002

Applicability: All Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) PW118, PW120, PW120 A and PW121 engines not incorporating P&WC Service Bulletin (SB) 20914, or later revisions. These engines are installed on, but not necessarily limited to, the EMB-120, DHC-8 series 100 and ATR-42 aircraft.

Compliance: At the next scheduled engine shop visit, or before 31 December 2003, whichever occurs first, unless already accomplished.

Background: Since the early 1990s, there have been several incidents of internal oil fires in the intercompressor case (ICC) in certain models of P&WC PW 100 series engines. In some incidents, the fire penetrated the ICC and required crew action to extinguish the fire. It has been determined that spontaneous ignition of engine oil (due to the reverse oil flow into the ICC as e result of a no. 5 bearing failure, or oil accumulation in the ICC cavity) can cause an ICC fire. P&WC has issued service bulletin (SB) 20914 to ensure containment of ICC fire.

Corrective Actions: Install the new NL sensor port sealing tube and the P2.5/P3 switching valve air tube assembly in accordance with P&WC SB 20914R4 dated 14 December 2001, or later revisions approved by the Chief, Continuing Airworthiness, Aircraft Certification, Transport Canada.
