Fire protection - Fire handles (ATA 26)
1. APPLICABILITY:
Models ATR 72-101/-102/-201/-202/-211/-212/-212A series airplanes equipped with LABINAL engine fire handles P/N 19-51-41 and P/N 19-51-51 the serial numbers of which are between 1330 and 1526 inclusive except S/N: 1376, 1426, 1435, 1456, 1458, 1460 to 1463, 1465, 1467, 1470, 1478, 1479, 1484 to 1486, 1499, 1510 to 1519 and 1521 to 1525.
2. REASON5:
During assembly line functional tests, random operation of certain fire handles due to intermittent failure to switch of a part of the micro-switch assemblies, was observed.
The quality enquiry revealed that one production batch could have a control shaft guide bore machining defect leading to misalignment with respect to the micro-switch assemblies.
The steps rendered mandatory by this Airworthiness Directive (AD) are intended to guarantee correct operation of the fire handles in the event of operation.
3. ACTIONS:
The following measures are rendered mandatory from the effective date of this AD.
A. Within 3 days after the effective date of this AD, insert a copy of this AD in the normal procedures chapter of the approved AFM and, before each flight and pending accomplishment of Service Bulletin (SB) ATR 72-26-1014, perform the engine fire protection test in accordance with the following procedure:
Engine 2 fire protection:
Depress SQUIB TEST pushbutton and check both AGENT SQUIB light illuminate.
Engine 1 fire protection:
Depress SQUIB TEST pushbutton and check both AGENT SQUIB light illuminate.
B. At the first opportunity, and at the latest before April 30, 2002, remove and replace the fire handles identified previously by handles that comply or have been inspected and repaired as necessary in accordance with the instruction of SB ATR 72-26-1014.
Application of the prescriptions of paragraph 3B cancels the engine fire protection pre-flight test required by paragraph 3A, and is the terminating action of this AD.

Any further approved revision of this SB is acceptable.
